A Framework for Building Ethereum-compatible Blockchain Networks

Polygon Edge is a Go framework from Polygon Labs for building Ethereum-compatible chains, with a node, a CLI, and several consensus options. PolyBFT is built around Polygon's own rootchain contracts, and IBFT is the more general option. It suits teams that want to run their own EVM chain and can accept Polygon's design choices.

The consensus layer is pluggable: consensus/dev, consensus/dummy, consensus/ibft and consensus/polybft sit side by side, so a single-node dev chain and a BFT network come from the same binary. Testing goes beyond unit tests, with separate fuzz, property-based and end-to-end workflows for PolyBFT, plus a load-test workflow in CI. The archive package implements backup and restore as tested code rather than a manual runbook, which matters for operators who would otherwise have to resync from genesis. The bls package checks its hash-to-point implementation against a JSON test-vector file, which is the right way to test a signature scheme.

The README is direct about the project's state: it calls itself a work in progress, warns that architecture may change, says the code is still being audited, and asks anyone heading to production to contact Polygon first. The last push was 2024-08-27, more than two years before today, so the Go dependencies, the PolyBFT contracts and the linked docs may have drifted, and adopting it means owning the upgrades. Polygon has stopped supporting Edge 0.6 and below and says it will focus only on the latest release, so older deployments get no upstream fixes. The docs live on Polygon's Supernets wiki, and the rootchain and bridge commands assume a Polygon-style root chain, so the parts that look generic are hard to separate from Polygon's own stack.
