EDI to JSON for Java using the EDIReader Framework Community Edition. Convert X12, EDIFACT, and HL7 to structured JSON with a simple Java API or command-line tool. Free for commercial use and available from Maven Central.
A small Java command-line tool and reference project that shows how to use the EDIReader Framework Community Edition's EdiToJson class to convert X12, EDIFACT, and HL7 files to JSON. It suits developers who want a quick converter or a starting point for the Java API, not a finished pipeline for trading-partner data.
The sample set covers real formats: X12 850, 824, and 837 (with two transaction sets), an EDIFACT D93A invoice, and an HL7 v2.5 ADT A01. The build converts every sample in its tests, so the examples are checked on every build. Conversion streams through a Reader and Writer instead of loading the whole file, which suits large interchanges. The CLI refuses to overwrite its input, including when the two paths are symlinks or hard links to the same file, and it documents its exit codes. The tests run again against the shaded JAR in a temp directory with no dependency classpath, so the packaging is verified and not just the compiled classes.
The CLI disables recoverable-error recovery, so one malformed segment in a messy production file means exit code 1 and possibly partial output, with no way to change that from the command line. Only the Java API can configure this. No JSON output schema is documented. The README says the output preserves the interchange, groups, transactions, and segment data, but a downstream consumer has to read sample output or the framework source to know the shape. The project is a thin wrapper over a commercial Community Edition library, and the README is explicit that the framework is not open-source software, so the license file should be read before shipping this in a product despite the 'free for commercial use' description. There are no prebuilt binaries yet, so anyone who wants to run the tool needs JDK 21 and Maven 3.9 to build it from source.
