Comfy-Org/ComfyUI
The most powerful and modular diffusion model GUI, api and backend with a graph/nodes interface. The fastest local inference engine in the world.
ComfyUI is a node-graph-based UI, API, and inference engine for diffusion models (image, video, audio, 3D) built on PyTorch. It's aimed at people who want to build and share reusable generation pipelines rather than just type a prompt into a box — power users, tool builders, and anyone running SD/Flux/Wan-class models locally on constrained hardware.
The execution engine only re-runs graph nodes whose inputs actually changed, so iterating on one step of a multi-stage pipeline doesn't re-run everything upstream — a real engineering win over most UIs in this space. Hardware coverage is unusually broad for a single codebase: CUDA, ROCm (Linux and Windows), Intel XPU, Apple Silicon, Ascend NPU, and even Cambricon/Iluvatar backends, plus asynchronous weight streaming to run large models on 4GB VRAM. Workflows are just portable JSON (and get embedded directly in output PNGs), so sharing a pipeline is sharing a file, not a writeup.
The custom node ecosystem is the well-known tradeoff here: third-party nodes are arbitrary Python executed in-process, and the README itself warns that commits outside tagged stable releases 'may be very unstable and break many custom nodes' — dependency hell and silent breakage are routine. The frontend was split into a separate repo/pypi package (comfyui-frontend-package) that updates on its own cadence, which means core and UI can drift out of sync between releases. 'Partner nodes' for closed-source paid models (Nano Banana, Seedance, etc.) are now wired into an otherwise open-source core, and the node-graph paradigm itself is a real barrier for anyone who isn't already comfortable thinking in pipelines, App Mode notwithstanding.
