// the take

Dataflare is a native desktop database manager (Tauri/Rust + TypeScript) that connects to a huge range of engines — Postgres, MySQL, SQLite, ClickHouse, DuckDB, BigQuery, Cloudflare D1/R2/KV, and more — for browsing schemas, editing data, and running SQL. It's aimed at developers who juggle several different database types and want one GUI instead of a tool per vendor.

The per-database logic is split into standalone Rust crates (src-crates/postgres, clickhouse, duckdb, etc.) rather than one monolithic driver layer, which is a sane way to support this many backends without them all rotting together. Several drivers are compiled in natively via FFI (duckdb, sqlcipher, libsql, pglite) instead of shelling out, which should mean faster queries and no external binary dependency. SQL preview before execution and a dedicated read-only mode are both practical safety features for a tool whose whole job is running arbitrary SQL against production data. Using Tauri instead of Electron keeps it a native binary rather than a bundled Chromium.

It's AGPL-3.0 but also sells a paid license ('pay once, own it forever — all features and future updates included'), and the README never says what, if anything, is gated behind that purchase — worth checking before assuming it's fully free. The 'AI Enhanced' SQL generation feature implies sending schema and possibly query content to a third-party AI API, which is a real consideration for a tool people will point at production databases. Supporting ~25 backends through native FFI bindings (duckdb, chdb, sqlcipher, turso, pglite) is a large cross-platform build and maintenance surface — expect driver-specific bugs and slower fixes for the less common ones. At 621 stars and no visible test suite outside the Databricks crate, it's still early; credential storage goes through a custom crypto module (client-store/src/crypto.rs) rather than the OS keychain, which is worth a look before trusting it with real connection secrets.
