// the take

GeoPix is a lighting control and previsualization tool built as a TouchDesigner project, aimed at LED/DMX/video-surface lighting designers who want a 3D-animation-style workflow instead of juggling separate control and previz software. It targets TouchDesigner users in live events, installs, and stage lighting rather than general software developers.

It tackles a real pain point by unifying disparate pixel/DMX/video-surface mapping into one node-based workflow instead of requiring separate control and previz rigs. Building on TouchDesigner gives it GPU-accelerated real-time rendering and a mature node graph for free. The install script automates TouchDesigner and Python dependency setup, which lowers the barrier for lighting designers who aren't primarily programmers.

Calling it 'open source' is misleading: it hard-depends on TouchDesigner, a proprietary runtime that's free only for non-commercial use, so anyone doing paid lighting work needs a commercial TD license on top of this repo. The actual application logic lives inside a binary .toe file (GeoPix_2.0.toe), not readable source, so meaningful code review, diffing, or community PRs against the core product are effectively impossible. Development signals are weak: the version header still reads a 2024-02-22 build, the 'post launch gameplan' notes are from 2021 and reference features that were 'crucial missing at launch,' suggesting slow progress despite a recent push date. It's also Windows-only (batch installer, bundled .exe/.dll utilities), so there's no path for Mac or Linux lighting rigs.
