// the take
A native module for Expo apps that adds home screen quick action shortcuts on iOS/Android and dynamic app icon switching, with a config plugin to handle the native setup and an optional Expo Router integration. Aimed at Expo developers who want these OS-level affordances without writing Swift/Kotlin or ejecting.
The config plugin does the actual native legwork — Info.plist entries, Android adaptive-icon drawable generation, shortcuts.xml — so you're not hand-editing native project files on every prebuild. The API is small and well thought out (setItems, initial, addListener, isSupported) with hooks and an Expo Router helper (useQuickActionRouting) that maps actions to href navigation using typed routes. The docs don't paper over iOS/Android differences — they explain why static Android shortcuts aren't supported, how SF Symbols vs adaptive icons work, and give concrete UX guidance (4-item max, avoid branded icons on iOS) instead of generic advice. Still actively maintained with a version table tracking each Expo SDK release through 57.
It's explicitly a single-maintainer, unofficial package riding on every Expo SDK native API change — real bus-factor risk for something that touches platform code on each upgrade. Android only supports dynamic shortcuts, not static ones, because of intent complexity, so feature parity with iOS isn't there. The app icon switching API is marked experimental and on Android fully kills and restarts the app when triggered, which rules it out for anything beyond rare, deliberate icon changes. The Expo Router integration only handles href-based launches — the author's own README admits deep-linking from Siri, notifications, or share-sheet invocations isn't built yet, just designed around.
