Gibbon is a full LAMP-stack school management system covering attendance, behaviour, finance, library, and timetabling for K-12 schools. It's aimed at schools and IT admins willing to self-host a PHP app rather than pay for a SaaS SIS, and at PHP developers who want to build custom modules on top of it.
The feature set is genuinely deep and domain-specific — cron scripts for consecutive-absence alerts, petty cash notifications, overdue library notices, and weekly parent/tutor summary emails show this was built from real school workflows, not a generic CRUD app. The module/theme extension model keeps the core separate from add-ons, which is the right call for a system schools customize heavily. Internationalization is taken seriously, with a dedicated POEditor-based translation pipeline and dozens of shipped languages. It's still actively maintained (push within the last two weeks) and recently added a Docker dev environment specifically to lower the barrier for new contributors.
Schema management is a flat gibbon.sql dump plus a CHANGEDB.php script rather than versioned migrations, which makes upgrades and rollbacks harder to reason about than with any modern migration tool. Third-party JS/CSS (jQuery UI, TinyMCE, Chart.js, FullCalendar, ace) is vendored wholesale into lib/ instead of pulled via a package manager, so there's no Dependabot-style alerting and patching known vulnerabilities means manually swapping files. There's no visible automated test suite for a system that stores student PII and financial records, which is a real gap given the compliance stakes. The CI setup still carries .travis.yml and .gitlab-ci.yml alongside GitHub Actions, suggesting an unfinished migration and some lingering tech debt in the build pipeline.
