// the take

A Node.js script that composites layered PNGs into generative art collections with rarity weighting, mainly built for NFT drops. It's for someone who needs to batch-produce a few thousand trait-combination images plus matching metadata.json files without writing the compositing logic themselves.

The rarity weighting via filename suffix (#70, #40) is a genuinely simple API — no config schema to learn for the common case. Layer options (blend modes, opacity, bypassDNA, displayName) cover real edge cases like background layers that shouldn't count toward uniqueness. Multiple layerConfigurations let you grow a collection in distinct batches without restarting, and the DNA hash-based uniqueness check avoids duplicate trait combos for free.

No tests at all, and the core logic (DNA generation, rarity calc, canvas compositing) lives in a few large files in src/main.js with no separation that would make it safe to modify. It's single-threaded canvas rendering — generating thousands of images is slow and there's no batching/worker-pool story if you need a large collection. Last pushed April 2024, and this is squarely an artifact of the 2021-era NFT generator boom, so don't expect active maintenance or fixes if canvas or node versions drift. Output is just flat files and JSON — no IPFS/Arweave upload, no on-chain metadata step, so you're wiring that up yourself regardless.
