NeuralNine/youtube-downloader-converter

★ 545 · Python · updated Jul 2023

A simple Python script that is able to download YouTube videos or playlists and convert them into MP3.

A tiny Python script from NeuralNine (the YouTube education channel) that downloads YouTube videos or playlists and converts them to MP3. It's for someone who wants a one-off ripper script to read in an afternoon, not a tool to depend on.

Dead simple to read — four files, clear separation between the download logic (youtube_downloader.py) and the audio conversion (file_converter.py). No framework, no abstractions, does exactly the two things advertised. Good companion-code for a beginner tutorial, which is clearly its origin.

Last pushed July 2023 and still tagged 'v0.2 Alpha' — it never left alpha and has been abandoned for over two years. YouTube downloaders rot fast because YouTube keeps changing its player/signature scheme, so whatever extraction library this wraps has almost certainly broken since this was last touched; there's no indication it's pinned or vendored against that risk. No tests, no packaging (no setup.py/pyproject.toml), no requirements.txt visible in the tree. The README's all-caps copyright disclaimer is a tell that this is a legally gray script someone forked for personal use, not something built to be relied on or maintained.
