A pretty bad operating system

// the take

A hobby x86 operating system built from scratch in NASM and C by someone learning OS development as they go, following a bootloader tutorial and writing a VGA driver, keyboard driver, basic shell, and the start of an EXT2 filesystem. It's for someone who wants to watch a from-zero OS dev learning log, not for anyone looking for a usable or reusable OS component.

The scope is realistic for a learner: bootloader to protected mode switch, IDT/ISR setup, a VGA text driver with a cursor, a PS/2 keyboard driver, and a simple command shell are all present and apparently working. The README's update log is honest about where code came from (admits borrowing the bootloader from an article's GitHub source rather than claiming it as original work), and the project structure separates drivers, descriptor tables, and filesystem code reasonably cleanly for a single-person bare-metal project.

This is pre-alpha: no memory management yet (dynamic memory management is explicitly listed as not-yet-started), the EXT2 filesystem work is just beginning, and there's no process model, user mode, or any form of multitasking. There's no CI, no automated tests (hard to meaningfully test a bootloader/kernel without QEMU scripting, which isn't set up here), and no documented build/run instructions beyond a Makefile, so reproducing a boot requires guessing the toolchain versions (WSL + NASM + gcc) from the README's prose. One star, no other contributors, and the last push was a year ago, so it reads as paused rather than actively developed. The C# .NET 8 dependency mentioned in the description/topics is unexplained in the code shown — it's unclear what role, if any, managed code plays in a bare-metal x86 kernel.

We read the README, the directory tree and a key source file in October 2026. Nobody pays to be listed. How we judge →
