Quaint-Studios/Reia

★ 954 · GDScript · AGPL-3.0 · updated Sep 2026

RPG game action-adventure MMO built with Godot and Rust.

Reia is an ambitious open-source oRPG/MMO hybrid built in Godot 4, with a custom Rust netcode layer (Sustenet) and Turso for offline/online character portability. It's aimed at Godot developers curious about building a real-time multiplayer game with an actual economy, custom ECS, and moddable content, not at anyone looking for a finished game to play.

The netcode isn't just Godot's built-in multiplayer bolted on — Sustenet is a separate Rust project purpose-built for this game, which is a more serious architecture choice than most hobby MMO attempts. Using Turso (distributed SQLite) to let a character be cloned to a local machine and played offline, one-way, is a clever and technically specific solution to a real design problem. There's actual CI (Godot build, Rust CI, CodeQL) rather than just a README promising things, which signals the maintainers care about build health even at this stage.

The repo's own `_old_code` directory is full of `.gitkeep` placeholders for entire systems — inventory UI, quest manager, party system, networking, save/load, tests — meaning most of the game as described in the README doesn't exist in code yet. The scope (server-wide raids, player-owned islands, a full marketplace, day/night regions, procedural worlds, a custom modding platform) is enormous for a self-funded team building in GDScript, and MMO-scale performance in GDScript specifically is an open question the README never addresses. There's no alpha/beta date, and the 'why this project was created' section reads more like a personal journal entry than documentation of what's actually implemented, which makes it hard to gauge real progress from the outside.
