Experimental charting library for Svelte
Pancake is Rich Harris's experimental charting library for Svelte, built around composable components (Svg, SvgLine, SvgScatterplot, Bars, Quadtree) instead of a monolithic chart API. It's for Svelte devs who want to build custom charts from primitives rather than configure a black-box charting library.
The component composition model is genuinely different from Chart.js/D3-wrapper approaches — you assemble Box, Grid, SvgLine, SvgPoint etc. directly in markup, which gives real control over layout and makes charts easy to reason about. Responsive sizing works through Svelte's reactivity and CSS rather than JS resize observers or manual re-measurement, which is the clever bit the README is trying to explain. Quadtree.js for hit-testing scatterplots is a nice inclusion most hobby charting libs skip.
Last push was mid-2023 and it's explicitly labeled experimental — there's no changelog activity suggesting active maintenance, so treat this as a source of ideas rather than a dependency you upgrade over time. It's built for Svelte's older component/store model (routes use __layout.svelte, _folder naming), so it predates SvelteKit's current routing conventions and Svelte 5 runes; expect friction wiring it into a modern Svelte 5 project. There's no dedicated docs site beyond a dev.to post and a live examples gallery — you're reading source to understand the API surface, and no test directory means no guarantee behavior is locked in across Svelte version bumps.
