Shopify/Timber
The ultimate Shopify theme framework, built by Shopify.
Timber is an abandoned Shopify theme framework from 2018. Shopify themselves deprecated it in favor of Slate, and Slate has since also been deprecated — meaning this represents two generations of dead tooling. Do not start a new project on this.
- Complete coverage of all required Shopify template types including customer account templates, gift cards, and collections — useful as a reference for what templates a store needs
- i18n support with locales for de/es/fr/pt-BR/pt-PT baked in from the start, with RSpec tests to catch missing strings
- Ajax cart implementation included out of the box, which was non-trivial to wire up correctly in Liquid-era Shopify
- Officially deprecated since 2018 — last commit is 8 years old. Shopify's theme API and Online Store 2.0 architecture have completely changed since then; sections, blocks, and app blocks don't exist here
- Uses Bower for dependency management, which itself is deprecated. The toolchain is a museum piece
- Successor (Slate) was also abandoned by Shopify — if you follow the README's own recommendation you land on another dead project
- No metafield support, no JSON templates, no section schema — the foundational primitives of modern Shopify theme development are entirely absent
