// the take

neosnippet.vim is a snippet expansion plugin for Vim/Neovim from Shougo, designed to pair with deoplete for popup-driven snippet selection instead of memorizing trigger names. It's for Vim users on older plugin stacks (Vundle, dein, vim-plug) who haven't moved to a built-in snippet engine or LSP-based completion.

Deep integration with the deoplete completion popup means you pick snippets visually rather than typing and remembering exact trigger words. SnipMate-compatible snippet format support lets you reuse the large honza/vim-snippets collection without rewriting anything. It also ships denops, unite, denite, and neocomplete/neocomplcache source adapters, so it slots into several different completion backends depending on what era of Vim config you're running.

The README states outright that active development has stopped and only bug fixes will land — the author explicitly redirects people to Deoppet.nvim instead. It depends on deoplete (and deoplete depends on a Python 3 remote plugin runtime, or nvim-yarp/vim-hug-neovim-rpc shims on non-Neovim Vim), which is its own aging, Python-RPC-based completion engine rather than anything built-in. Last push was mid-2023 with no commits since, so compatibility with current Neovim releases or newer Vim8/Vim9 script semantics is untested and unmaintained. Anyone on a modern setup would be better served by native Vim9/Lua snippet engines or LSP snippet support, which this plugin predates and won't be updated to compete with.
