BBS Mesh Scripts for Meshtastic
A Python bot for Meshtastic LAN mesh radios that layers BBS-style messaging, network diagnostics, games, and emergency alerting on top of a base station. Built for ham radio operators and off-grid mesh hobbyists who want more out of their node than plain text relay.
Genuinely modular - each capability (games, BBS, alerts, radio monitoring) lives in its own file under modules/, so you can skip heavy optional deps like YOLOv5 or Vosk entirely if you don't need them. Integration breadth is real and specific (Hamlib rigctld S-meter polling, WSJT-X/JS8Call decode forwarding, NOAA/USGS/FEMA iPAWS feeds) - this reads like it was built by people who actually run ham setups, not a demo. CodeQL is wired into CI and there's an actual SECURITY.md, which is above the bar for a hobbyist radio project.
mesh_bot.py is a single large entry point running games, GPIO, alerting, and shell access in one process - a bug in a card game module can plausibly take an emergency-alert node offline. Admin-only DM shell command execution is a deliberate attack surface; fine for a single trusted operator, risky the moment the admin list or node key leaks, since it's RCE over RF. There's effectively no automated test coverage (modules/test_bot.py is thin) for a codebase juggling this many hardware and external API integrations, so regressions in one module are easy to miss. Most of the headline features (weather, quake data, iPAWS, LLM/RAG) require internet access, which undercuts the pitch for people actually running this off-grid.
