// the take
A GitHub Actions workflow (plus a hosted generator site) that runs Expo's local EAS CLI build on GitHub's own runners instead of EAS Build's cloud service, so you get APK/AAB output without paying for Expo's build plans. It's aimed at solo devs and small teams on Expo who are hitting EAS Build's free-tier build cap or don't want the $99+/month plans.
Running `eas build --local` on a GitHub-hosted runner is a legitimate trick — you get real APK/AAB artifacts without an EAS Build subscription, and the workflow wires in TypeScript/ESLint/Prettier checks and multiple upload targets (GitHub Releases, Google Drive, rclone) so output isn't locked to one place. The web-based generator that spits out a ready `.yml` lowers the barrier for people who don't want to hand-write Actions config.
The 'unlimited free builds' pitch glosses over GitHub Actions' own minute limits on private repos, and native Android/iOS builds are slow enough on standard runners that you'll burn through them fast; there's no iOS code-signing story documented despite an `ios` flag existing in the generated workflow names. The whole approach is downstream of Expo's local build command staying free and stable — if Expo locks that down or changes EAS CLI's local build behavior, this breaks with no fallback. It's a single-maintainer project with a marketing-heavy README (cost comparison tables, 'save $1,188/year') rather than docs on failure modes, and the repo ships hundreds of generated example workflows explicitly labeled 'Not Tested,' which is a weak signal for how reliable the generator's output actually is across configurations.
