// the take

Unity-Robotics-Hub is Unity's project for simulating robots inside the Unity Editor — importing URDF robots, wiring up ROS 2 pub/sub, simulating LiDAR/camera/IMU sensors, and exporting captured data for later use. It's aimed at robotics engineers already comfortable in the Unity Editor and C# who want to test navigation and control code against a simulated robot before touching real hardware.

The five-module structure (Intro → Messages → Sensors → Creating a Simulation → Capturing Data) builds state incrementally with checkpoints after each section, so it's hard to silently drift off track partway through. Module 4's rclpy node is explicitly described as the same code that would run on physical hardware, meaning the simulation isn't a disconnected toy — it targets the actual deployment path. It also covers the parts of Unity/ROS integration that usually break in practice: coordinate system conversion between Unity and ROS, differential drive kinematics, and per-joint TF broadcasting.

The tools this repo used to ship directly — the URDF importer, sensor simulation, ROS 2 support — are being folded into 'Simulation Pro,' a package gated behind 'register your interest' and early access for Unity Industry developers. A repo badged Apache-2.0 whose README is now mostly a funnel toward a commercial package you can't just clone and run is a bait-and-switch for anyone expecting open tooling. The previously usable open packages are pushed into ARCHIVE.md as 'unsupported.' Modules 4 and 5 require a working ROS 2 Lyrical install on Ubuntu, and the README says setting that up is explicitly out of scope, so the two most hands-on modules assume prerequisite work this repo won't help with. There's also no actual logic in this tree to inspect — it's prefabs, materials, and docs; the real functionality lives in Simulation Pro, outside this repository entirely.

We read the README, the directory tree and a key source file in October 2026. Nobody pays to be listed. How we judge →
