// the take
StreamFX is a GPLv3 OBS Studio plugin that bundles a large set of filters, sources, transitions, and hardware encoders (3D transform, blur, SDF effects, LUT-based color grading, NVIDIA Maxine-powered background removal/superresolution/face tracking, plus NVENC/AMF/ProRes/DNxHR encoding) that aren't in stock OBS. It's for streamers/video producers who've hit the ceiling of OBS's built-in filters and want GPU-accelerated effects or wider codec/container support without separate tools.
The component architecture is genuinely clean — each feature (blur, color-grade, denoising, nvidia, ffmpeg) is its own CMake target with isolated source/gfx subfolders, so you can read or rip out one filter without wading through a monolith. Wrapping NVIDIA's closed Maxine AR/VFX SDKs (face detection, greenscreen, superresolution) into an open plugin is uncommon and clearly took real reverse-engineering/integration effort, not just a thin binding. The FFmpeg encoder layer unifies hardware (NVENC, AMF) and software (ProRes, DNxHR) codecs behind one interface, and the project enforces clang-format/clang-tidy with CI across platforms plus a real CONTRIBUTING.md/CODEOWNERS setup, so the engineering hygiene is better than most OBS plugins.
Last push was December 2024 — nearly two years stale against a host app (OBS) and vendor SDKs (Maxine, AMF) that both keep shipping breaking API changes, so there's real risk it silently stops building or crashes on current OBS without anyone noticing. There's no visible test directory anywhere in the tree for a codebase this size, which is a real gap when you're touching GPU shader code and hardware encoder paths that are hard to manually regression-test. Depending on NVIDIA's proprietary Maxine SDK inside a GPLv3 project muddies the licensing story for anyone redistributing builds, and the build itself requires vendored submodules plus out-of-tree patches against obs-studio (see patches/), which raises the bar to compile from source well above a typical plugin.
