actix/actix-extras

★ 889 · Rust · Apache-2.0 · updated Oct 2026

A collection of additional crates supporting the actix and actix-web frameworks.

A grab-bag of official actix-web companion crates: CORS, session management, identity, bearer/basic auth, a Redis-backed rate limiter, protobuf extraction, raw websockets, and structured tracing middleware. It's for actix-web users who need these specific pieces without hunting down and vetting third-party crates one at a time.

Maintained by the actix org itself with real CI, codecov, and deps.rs badges, so you're not trusting a rando's abandoned fork for auth or session handling. actix-session supports pluggable storage backends (signed/encrypted cookies, two different Redis client implementations) so you can swap persistence without rewriting session logic. actix-ws gives you websockets without actix's actor system, which is the newer, saner API compared to the old actix-web-actors approach. tracing-actix-web wires root spans and request IDs into actix-web's middleware stack correctly, which is fiddly to get right yourself.

It's nine semi-independent crates with uneven attention — actix-protobuf is a single lib.rs with no visible test file, while actix-session has a full integration test suite; you can't assume uniform quality just because it lives in this repo. actix-limitation only implements a fixed-window counter, which has the known burst problem at window boundaries — fine for rough throttling, not for anything needing accurate rate limiting. Carrying both redis_actor.rs and redis_rs.rs backends in actix-session is legacy baggage from the actix-web actor era; pick redis_rs, the other is dead weight. Everything here is actix-web-specific, so adopting any of these crates deepens lock-in to a framework whose community and crate ecosystem has shrunk relative to axum.
