PRDownloader - A file downloader library for Android with pause and resume support
A Java Android library for downloading files over HTTP(S) with pause, resume, cancel, and progress callbacks. It suits apps that pull large files or APKs and need resume without writing their own Range-request handling.
- Persistent resume is opt-in. DatabaseOpenHelper has a NoOpsDbHelper counterpart, so apps that don't call setDatabaseEnabled skip SQLite bookkeeping, and enabling it lets a partial download survive the process being killed.
- The file layer has a random-access writer alongside a plain output stream. A random-access writer is the right split for resume, since it has to seek into a partial file.
- Cancellation works by download id, by tag, or via cancelAll, and every request gets start/resume, pause, cancel, progress, and completion callbacks. Callers never have to track download threads themselves.
- Downloads run on a priority-aware executor, and an HttpClient interface sits between the task and DefaultHttpClient. That is a plausible seam for swapping transports, though the README still lists the OkHttp integration as a TODO.
- The test directories contain only the Android Studio template stubs (ExampleUnitTest, ExampleInstrumentedTest), and the README's own TODO lists 'Test Cases'. Changes to the resume logic have no regression coverage.
- The README doesn't say what happens if the remote file changes between pause and resume. Check that the resume path validates against the server's ETag or Last-Modified before trusting a partial file, or you can end up with a corrupt result.
- The API is Java-only and callback-based, with anonymous classes throughout. There is no Flow, coroutine, or LiveData surface, so Kotlin callers have to wrap it themselves.
- Distribution is JitPack only, and the README pins 1.0.2. Consumers depend on JitPack building the tag, and the library isn't published to Maven Central.
