Performance Optimizer Observation Platform
poop is a Linux-only CLI that benchmarks and compares multiple commands using perf_event_open, reporting wall time plus six hardware counters like peak memory and cache misses. It's for developers doing low-level performance work who need more than hyperfine's wall-clock-only comparisons.
Pulls real hardware counters (peak RSS, cache references/misses, branch misses) via perf_event_open instead of just timing loops, which is the actual differentiator from hyperfine. Doesn't spawn a shell per run, so shell startup noise doesn't pollute the samples. Written in Zig with zig build as the only dependency, producing a single static binary with no runtime deps to manage.
Linux-only by design (perf_event_open), so there's no path for macOS or Windows users. No way to pick a different reference command — it's always the first argument, unlike hyperfine's explicit flag for this. README explicitly calls it brand new and admits it lacks hyperfine's polish: no warmup runs, no statistical outlier handling, no export formats (JSON/CSV/markdown) mentioned anywhere. No visible test suite in the repo tree, just a CI workflow file, so correctness of the counter readings is unverified beyond the author's own usage.
