Metadata Filesystem for Windows
MetaFS is a Windows metadata filesystem built from a kernel driver (C), a C++ shell extension that adds a property page, a Windows service, a SQL Server schema in an SSDT project, and a C# core library over the data layer. It is for Windows developers who want to see how a filesystem and a metadata store fit together, not for anyone who needs something to install this week.
The schema lives in an SSDT database project with one .sql file per table, so the metadata model is reviewable and deployable as code rather than existing only on a server. The managed Core separates contracts in Abstractions/ from implementations in Concrete/, which keeps the data and network layers swappable. The native side is split into separate driver, interop, service, and shell extension projects, so each boundary is visible in the tree.
The driver is signed with WDKTestCert.cer, so it only loads on machines with test signing enabled, which rules it out for anything beyond a lab. There is no test project in the tree: TestHarness is a WinForms app, and the interfaces in Core would support unit tests that nothing here runs. The repo carries leftovers, including a 'MetaFsService - Copy.cpp', EntityFramework 6.0.0 binaries vendored into packages/, and a last push in September 2025 with no sign of ongoing maintenance. The README is one line plus a link to an external blog post, and nothing in the tree explains the build order across the driver, service, extension, and database.
