// the take
This is the GitHub mirror of frameworks/base from the Android Open Source Project — the Java/Kotlin/C++ code behind ActivityManager, PackageManager, WindowManager, input, and most of what makes up the Android framework layer. It's for engineers debugging platform behavior, writing custom ROMs, or just wanting to see how Android actually implements things like autofill or window management under the hood, not for anyone looking to clone-and-build a project.
The breadth of real perf tests under apct-tests/perftests is unusual — there are dedicated benchmarks for CursorWindow, SQLite I/O, Conscrypt socket handshakes, XML block parsing, even int division costs, which is a level of micro-benchmark discipline most projects never bother with. The OWNERS file granularity (per-subsystem files like OOM_ADJUSTER_OWNERS, ZYGOTE_OWNERS, BAL_OWNERS) is a genuinely useful pattern to study for how Google partitions review responsibility across a codebase this size. As a reference for platform internals it's unmatched — if you need to know exactly how autofill, content capture, or blob storage work internally, the implementation is right here instead of behind a black box.
There's no README and no build instructions on GitHub at all — this mirror is unbuildable and unrunnable on its own; you need the full AOSP repo tool, Soong, and a target device/emulator, none of which this page tells you. All real contribution happens through Gerrit at android-review.googlesource.com, and the GitHub repo doesn't mention that, so PRs opened here go nowhere. The stars and forks count is close to meaningless as an adoption signal since nobody depends on this repo directly — it's starred for reference, not used as a library. Navigating the tree requires already knowing Android's subsystem boundaries; there's no module map or architecture doc for someone coming in cold.
We read the README, the directory tree and a key source file in October 2026. Nobody pays to be listed. How we judge →
