Lightweight Firebase/Supabase alternative built to run anywhere — incl. Next.js, React Router, Astro, Cloudflare, Bun, Node, AWS Lambda & more.

bknd is a backend-in-a-box for TypeScript apps: data, auth, media, and basic workflows behind one REST API, deployable inside your existing framework (Next.js, Astro, React Router) or standalone via CLI. It's aimed at people who want a Supabase/Firebase-like experience without a separate hosted service or vendor lock-in.

The adapter list isn't just marketing copy — the repo has real, separately tested implementations for astro, aws-lambda, bun, cloudflare (workers, D1, Durable Objects, R2), nextjs, node, react-router, sveltekit, and tanstack-start, each with its own spec file. Test coverage is unusually deep for a project this size: dedicated specs for every field type, relations, polymorphic data, joins, and both SQLite and Postgres connections. The 'adapter-based, direct driver access' design is a real architectural stance, not just a slogan — you're not stuck behind an ORM abstraction if you need to drop to raw SQL.

Pre-1.0 with an explicit no-backward-compat-guarantee warning — anyone adopting this for production needs to pin versions and expect breaking changes. Hard requirement on Node 22.13+ because of node:sqlite is a real constraint that will knock out plenty of deployment targets still on LTS 20. The npm package bundles backend, admin UI, CLI, and static assets together, so the advertised '~300kB gzipped' is squishy and depends heavily on which entry point you actually import — easy to end up shipping more than expected if you're not careful about import paths. Flows/workflows is listed as a shipped feature but the README admits the UI for it isn't built yet, so it's half a feature in the current release.
