// the take

Claroline Connect is a self-hosted learning management system built on Symfony (PHP) and React, aimed at schools and organizations that want to run their own LMS instead of using Moodle or a SaaS platform like Canvas. It's old enough to have a real plugin architecture, with integrations for BigBlueButton (video conferencing), PeerTube (video hosting), and GitHub OAuth shipped as first-class Symfony bundles.

Integrations are proper Symfony bundles with their own entities, migrations, finders, and serializers, so you can enable only what you need instead of getting a monolith blob. There's a defined per-version migration path (Version20201201100053.php style classes) for upgrades, not manual DB surgery. The API layer follows a documented set of patterns (Crud, Finder, Serializer, Model) that give a consistent way to extend the data model without hacking core. Development is active with CI on every push and changelogs through version 15.0.

350 stars and 201 forks is thin for an LMS this size, meaning a small pool of third-party plugins and community troubleshooting compared to Moodle. Integrations like BigBlueButton and PeerTube are separate services you have to stand up and operate yourself, not managed add-ons — adopting the LMS means adopting their infra too. There's no containerized or cloud-native deployment path visible (no compose file, no Helm chart), so you're on your own for packaging a bare PHP/Symfony app for production. It's a genuine two-stack project (Symfony backend, React/Redux frontend per bundle), so contributing or debugging across a feature means being comfortable in both, which raises the bar for anyone picking this up cold.
