👩🏻🔬 Javascript Whatsapp api library for chatbots
Sulla is a Puppeteer-driven WhatsApp Web automation library for Node, giving you a fairly complete JS API for sending messages/media, managing groups, and listening to events without touching WhatsApp's official Business API. It's aimed at anyone who wants a whatsapp bot and is willing to live with browser automation instead of a real API.
The API surface is genuinely broad for a single library — messaging, media upload/download with decryption, group admin operations, contact/profile lookups, and typed events (onMessage, onAck, onStateChange, onParticipantsChanged) all in one place. It ships TypeScript type definitions alongside the JS, so you get editor autocomplete even though the internals are untyped JS. Session persistence is handled for you so you're not rescanning a QR code on every restart, and multi-session support is a first-class create() parameter rather than something bolted on later.
The README opens with the author telling you not to use this — it's explicitly unmaintained since 2023 and points you at three forks (venom, wppconnect, open-wa) instead, which is the real signal here. There's no test directory anywhere in the tree, for a library whose entire job is scraping WhatsApp Web's internal store objects (src/lib/wapi) — exactly the kind of code that breaks silently when WhatsApp ships a UI change, which is likely why it stopped getting updates. The build process is three separate manual steps (wapi, middleware, sulla) with a typo'd script name (build:build:middleware) still in package.json, suggesting the tooling was never cleaned up before maintenance stopped.
