// the take

Dragonfly is a drop-in replacement for Redis and Memcached built around a shared-nothing, thread-per-core architecture instead of the single-threaded event loop model. It's aimed at teams running cache/KV workloads at scale who are CPU or memory-bound on Redis and want more throughput per instance without changing client code.

Real architectural bet (VLL-based multi-key transactions without locks, Dash hashtable, fork-less snapshotting) rather than just a thin wrapper around existing code, and the benchmarks in the README are detailed and specific about instance types and percentiles rather than vague claims. Memory efficiency and fork-less bgsave addressing a genuine known Redis pain point (fork-based snapshot memory spikes). Native HTTP console + Prometheus metrics on the same port is a nice practical touch for ops. Broad command coverage (~185 Redis commands) and compatibility focus means low migration friction.

Benchmarks are all self-reported by the project with no independent third-party numbers linked, and compare against older/common instance types rather than apples-to-apples tuned Redis configs. Cluster mode and replication are listed but the docs suggest these are newer and less battle-tested than Redis's decades of production hardening. No discussion in the README of licensing (it's BSL, not a fully permissive license, which matters for anyone evaluating for commercial use) despite being a major adoption consideration. The project is clearly steering users toward Dragonfly Cloud, so some documented features/flags may be weighted toward that commercial path rather than pure self-hosted operation.

We read the README, the directory tree and a key source file in October 2026. Nobody pays to be listed. How we judge →
