HTML5 Demos

// the take

A personal dump of HTML5 API demos from conference talks (AddonCon 2010, Chrome Dev Summit 2013, etc.) by a former Chrome DevRel engineer. It's an archive of early Web Components, App Cache, Web SQL and Notification API examples, useful for anyone doing browser-history archaeology rather than anyone building something today.

Real, working implementations of early Shadow DOM and custom-element patterns from someone who was inside Chrome at the time, which is hard to find documented elsewhere. The README's svn export trick for grabbing a single demo folder without cloning the 500MB+ repo is a genuinely useful pattern worth stealing for any repo this bloated with binaries.

Most of the APIs on display (Web SQL, Application Cache) are deprecated or removed from browsers entirely, so the code doesn't run as-is anymore. No commit of substance since the early 2010s and no documentation per demo, so you're reverse-engineering intent from folder names and jQuery 1.5.1-era source. There's no indication anyone maintains this or would accept questions about it, it's a snapshot, not a living project.

We read the README, the directory tree and a key source file in October 2026. Nobody pays to be listed. How we judge →
