paho.mqtt.javascript
The Paho JavaScript client is the Eclipse Foundation's MQTT client for browsers, shipped as a single file (src/paho-mqtt.js) that speaks MQTT over WebSockets. It is for front-end developers who need to subscribe to or publish on a broker from a web page and cannot open raw TCP sockets.
- The client is one dependency-free file, so it drops into a page with a script tag and nothing else to install.
- It is the reference browser implementation from a long-running project, and the test suite includes interop and live take-over specs that run against a real broker, not only mocks.
- The API is small: one Client, one Message, and callbacks for connection loss and arrival. That is easy to follow for basic pub/sub.
- The last push was May 2024, and the README still points its build badge at travis-ci.org, which has been retired, so there is no working CI signal.
- It only works over WebSockets. Anything that expects plain TCP needs a gateway in front of the broker, and the setup burden lands on the user.
- The callback API predates promises and async/await, and the tree shows no TypeScript typings, so modern front-end projects have to write their own.
- The namespace changed from Paho.MQTT to Paho in 1.1.0 with no migration tooling, and the build is driven by Maven (pom.xml) in a JavaScript project, which will surprise most contributors.
