// the take

The open-source Android app for Google I/O, built as Google's reference implementation of Android Architecture Components with Kotlin, Coroutines/Flow, and Firebase. It's for Android developers who want a real-world example of MVVM with Hilt DI, Room FTS, and Navigation component, not for anyone needing an actual working conference app.

Solid reference architecture: ViewModels isolate logic from Fragments, a thin domain layer of UseCase classes handles business logic off the UI thread, and the repository layer cleanly abstracts Firestore/DataStore/remote sources. Uses Room's FTS4 for session/speaker search instead of a bolted-on search library. Includes real benchmark tests (Jetpack Benchmark + Macrobenchmark) around startup and data parsing, which most sample apps skip entirely. The Dagger-to-Hilt and LiveData-to-Flow migrations are documented with actual before/after context, useful if you're doing the same migration yourself.

Archived as of January 2023 — Google explicitly tells you to use Now in Android instead, so this is dead code, not a maintained reference. Compose support never landed on main; it's stuck experimental on a separate branch that itself stopped moving. The architecture is tightly coupled to Firebase (Firestore, Cloud Functions, FCM, Remote Config), so adapting the patterns to a non-Firebase backend means rewriting the entire data layer, not just swapping a config. Conference data is frozen at 2019 content, so anything you clone and run is inert — there's no live use case left, only the code to read.
