// the take

USBView is a small GTK desktop app that draws the USB device tree on Linux, pulling topology and device info straight from sysfs. It's for people who want a quick visual map of what's plugged into their USB bus instead of parsing `lsusb -t` output by hand.

Maintained by Greg Kroah-Hartman, who owns the Linux USB subsystem and stable kernel tree, so the sysfs parsing is going to track kernel reality accurately. Codebase is tiny and single-purpose — a handful of C files (sysfs.c, usbtree.c, interface.c) with no unnecessary abstraction. Ships proper packaging artifacts (man page, desktop file, AppStream metainfo) so distro maintainers can package it with minimal friction.

GTK3 dependency makes it dead weight on any headless box or server, which is where you'd often actually want to inspect USB topology (e.g. over SSH) — `lsusb -t` or `usbtop` does the same job without a display. Linux-only by design since it reads sysfs directly, so no BSD or other Unix support. It's a thin GUI layer over data you can already get from sysfs/lsusb, so the value-add over scripting your own view is mostly aesthetic. Release cadence is sparse (gaps of years between pushes historically), fine for a stable utility but don't expect fast turnaround on bug reports.
