🥧 HTTPie CLI — modern, user-friendly command-line HTTP client for the API era. JSON support, colors, sessions, downloads, plugins & more.
HTTPie is a mature command-line HTTP client meant to replace ad-hoc curl invocations with a more readable syntax (KEY=VALUE for JSON body, KEY:VALUE for headers) and colorized, formatted output. It's aimed at developers who spend a lot of time poking at APIs interactively from a terminal rather than scripting bulk requests.
The plugin system (httpie/plugins) is a real extension point, not decoration — auth schemes and transport adapters can be added without forking. Session support persists cookies and headers across invocations, which curl makes you hand-roll with cookie jar files. The test suite is unusually thorough for a CLI tool, with dedicated coverage for redirects, SSL, compression, downloads, and session format migrations across versions. The request syntax is genuinely faster to type and read than equivalent curl flags for anything with a JSON body or custom headers.
It's a Python CLI wrapping requests, so startup latency and throughput make it a poor fit for scripting high-volume or performance-sensitive request loops — curl or a compiled client wins there. Last push was December 2024, so active development has clearly slowed even if the project isn't abandoned. There's no concurrent/batch request mode; it's strictly one request per invocation, so load-testing or fan-out use cases need a different tool. The session and legacy-format migration code (httpie/legacy/) signals some accumulated backward-compat debt that a new contributor would need to untangle to touch that area.
