// the take

A Rails gem that drops a configurable share-button widget into your views, wired up to ~19 networks from Twitter and Facebook down to Weibo, Douban, Vkontakte and Odnoklassniki. It's aimed at Rails apps (particularly ones with a Chinese or Russian user base) that want one-line social sharing without hand-rolling each network's share URL.

Covers a genuinely wide spread of networks, including ones most Western share-button gems skip entirely (Weibo, QZone, Douban, Vkontakte, Odnoklassniki, WeChat) — useful if you have any international audience. The helper API is flexible: per-call title/url/image overrides, runtime `allow_sites` restriction, and a generator that scaffolds the initializer. Ships i18n locale files for 10 languages, and icon sizing is a one-line SCSS variable override rather than fighting sprite CSS.

Last pushed May 2021 — over five years stale, and share-button gems are exactly the kind of thing that breaks quietly when a network changes its sharer endpoint or deprecates an app-review requirement (Twitter/X's share intents and Facebook's dialog params have both shifted since). Built on CoffeeScript and the Sprockets asset pipeline (`#= require`), so it doesn't drop into a Rails 7+ app using importmap or esbuild without extra shimming. Facebook sharing needs a live domain and app review to work at all, which the README flags but the gem does nothing to help with. No tests visible in the tree, so there's no signal whether the per-network URL builders still match each site's current sharing API.
