// the take
Keras 3 is the high-level multi-backend deep learning API, now running on TensorFlow, JAX, PyTorch, or OpenVINO for inference. It's for anyone building neural networks who wants a stable, well-documented API without committing to a single backend's quirks.
Genuine multi-backend support means you can write a model once and swap the runtime, which is useful if you want JAX's speed but TensorFlow's deployment tooling. The API design discipline (api_gen.sh, generated __init__.py files per namespace) keeps the public surface consistent and versioned. Huge test and CI matrix covering CPU/GPU/TPU across all backends gives real confidence it won't silently break on your setup.
The multi-backend abstraction layer adds a debugging tax when something goes wrong at the ops level — stack traces often point into backend-dispatch code rather than your model. Custom training loops with backend-specific features (e.g. TF's distribute strategies, PyTorch's autograd tricks) require dropping out of the abstraction, so the 'write once' promise has real limits. OpenVINO backend is inference-only and clearly bolted on, not a first-class citizen like the other three.
