A Kubernetes web UI that is fully-featured, user-friendly and extensible
Headlamp is a Kubernetes UI that runs either in-cluster as a web dashboard or as a desktop app (Electron on top of a Go backend), for admins and developers who want more than kubectl but don't want a proprietary tool. It's aimed at people who used to reach for Lens before that went commercial, or who find the stock Kubernetes dashboard too limited.
It now lives under kubernetes-sigs rather than a single vendor's org, so it's not tied to one company's roadmap or pricing decisions. The backend has real fuzz testing (cookie parsing, kubeconfig parsing, cluster name sanitization) alongside conventional unit tests, which is rare for a UI project and suggests they've thought about untrusted input. The RBAC handling actually checks what the current user's token can do and disables actions accordingly, instead of just letting requests fail after the fact. The plugin system is a genuine extension point with its own repo and Artifact Hub distribution, not just a config file.
The org migration is fresh enough that the README itself warns about broken links, so expect some rough edges in docs and package locations for a while. Running both an Electron desktop shell and a Go backend means two runtimes and two dependency trees to keep patched, plus a bigger attack surface (protocol handlers, OAuth flows, secure storage) than a plain web dashboard would have. Contributing requires comfort in both Go and TypeScript, which narrows who can meaningfully help across the whole stack. Plugin quality is only as good as whatever gets published to Artifact Hub — there's no mention of a review or vetting process, so third-party plugins are a trust-it-yourself situation.
