// the take
Lumen is the stripped-down micro-framework kernel built on Laravel's Illuminate components, meant for API-only services where the full Laravel service container is overkill. It's for PHP developers who already know Laravel and want the same routing/Eloquent/queue APIs without the overhead of views, sessions, or the full framework boot cycle.
Reuses Illuminate's routing, container, Eloquent, and queue components directly, so anyone who knows Laravel is productive immediately with zero new APIs to learn. Boot time and memory footprint are meaningfully smaller than full Laravel since it skips most default service providers and facades. Test helpers (DatabaseMigrations, MakesHttpRequests) mirror Laravel's testing conventions, so existing test suites port over with minimal changes.
Taylor Otwell has publicly steered users toward Laravel + Octane instead of Lumen for new projects, and Lumen hasn't gotten meaningful feature work in years — this repo is effectively in maintenance mode, not active development. Plenty of Laravel packages assume facades or service providers Lumen doesn't register by default, so integrating third-party packages often means manually wiring bindings that 'just work' in full Laravel. No Blade/views support out of the box means it's a dead end the moment a project needs anything beyond pure JSON APIs, forcing a rewrite onto full Laravel later.
