Litestar is an ASGI API framework competing with FastAPI/Starlette, built around msgspec for fast serialization with class-based controllers, DI, and built-in SQLAlchemy/DTO support. Aimed at people building production APIs who want more structure out of the box than Starlette gives and faster validation than Pydantic-first frameworks.
msgspec-based validation is genuinely faster than Pydantic for the hot path, and it still supports dataclasses/TypedDict/attrs/Pydantic simultaneously if you need interop. Class-based controllers plus layered DI/guards/middleware give a more opinionated structure than Starlette without being as magic as FastAPI. Built-in DTO factory and first-class SQLAlchemy integration (advanced-alchemy) solve a real pain point that FastAPI punts on. Active maintenance with real CI, decent test coverage via codecov, and a large example gallery in docs.
Smaller ecosystem than FastAPI means fewer third-party plugins, Stack Overflow answers, and tutorials when you hit an edge case. The multi-validation-backend support (pydantic v1+v2+msgspec+attrs all at once) is a selling point but also a maintenance and debugging liability - stack traces and error messages differ depending on which library validated your model. DTOFactory and the layered parameter/dependency system have a learning curve that's steeper than the README examples suggest once you get into nested relations or complex serialization rules. Governance is centered on a small core team (cofin, Goldziher) which is a bus-factor risk for anyone betting production infra on it.
