Media Player Web Component - Uniform Player API - Supports HLS, Dash, Mux, Vimeo, YouTube, JW Player, Wistia
A web component that wraps seven different video player backends (native HTML5/HLS/DASH, Mux, YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia, JW Player) behind a single HTMLMediaElement-compatible API. It's for teams building a video product that needs to support multiple hosting providers (or migrate between them) without rewriting player-control code for each one.
Normalizing play/pause/seek/events across native <video>, two iframe-based proprietary SDKs (YouTube, Vimeo), and three more (Wistia, JW, Mux) behind one consistent API is real engineering work most teams underestimate until they try it themselves. It composes with Media Chrome rather than shipping its own UI, so you get the abstraction without being locked into their controls. Zero-build usage via ESM/jsDelivr CDN import is a nice touch for quick adoption. The docs site includes a cross-provider comparison and Lighthouse scoring page, which suggests the author actually validated behavior differences rather than assuming parity.
No test directory anywhere in the tree, which is a real liability here — iframe-based provider APIs (YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia, JW) change their embed behavior without notice, and without tests regressions will surface as silent playback bugs in production. Last commit is mid-2024 and stars sit at 122, so this hasn't seen the kind of adoption that would catch edge cases across provider updates. Single maintainer (luwes) means bus-factor of one for something acting as a dependency boundary over six external, independently-changing third-party APIs. The package ships as plain JS with a hand-maintained .d.ts rather than being authored in TypeScript, so type coverage will drift from the implementation over time.
