// the take
Smelte is a Material Design component library for Svelte, built on top of Tailwind CSS via a custom Rollup plugin. It's aimed at developers who want a full set of pre-built Material components (text fields, data tables, date pickers, etc.) without building them from scratch.
Wide component coverage for a Material Design app — text field, select, data table, autocomplete, treeview, date picker, navigation drawer are all there, which is more than most Svelte UI kits offer. Per-component imports (`smelte/src/components/Button`) make tree-shaking straightforward instead of pulling in the whole library. The Tailwind integration runs PurgeCSS through the Rollup plugin, so shipped CSS is just the utility classes actually used. Being Svelte-based, the components compile away rather than shipping a runtime component framework in the bundle.
The whole build story is wired to Svelte v3 and a custom Rollup plugin (`smelte/rollup-plugin-smelte`) from the Sapper era — there's no SvelteKit integration, and the README still lists Webpack support as 'coming soon,' which means it's still Rollup-only. Last push was February 2025 and the project reads like a single-maintainer effort, which is a real risk given how much Svelte's compiler and tooling have moved since v3. No mention of accessibility testing or ARIA conformance for the form components (text field, select, date picker), which is where most Material clones cut corners. Theming happens through the Tailwind config object passed into the Rollup plugin at build time, not a runtime API, so switching themes dynamically or supporting user-selectable themes isn't really supported out of the box.
