MediaCMS is a modern, fully featured open source video and media CMS
MediaCMS is a self-hosted video/media platform built on Django + React, handling everything from upload to adaptive HLS streaming. It's aimed at universities, orgs with sensitive content, or anyone wanting a YouTube-like portal they fully control instead of building on top of raw object storage.
The transcoding pipeline is the real value here — FFmpeg-based, multiple resolution/codec profiles (h264/h265/vp9), HLS adaptive streaming, and priority-based job scheduling through Celery, which is the part most self-hosted alternatives punt on. RBAC plus SAML and LTI 1.3 support means it can actually slot into institutional auth/LMS setups, not just a toy demo. Chunked resumable uploads (Fine Uploader) are table stakes for video but frequently missing elsewhere. Local Whisper integration for transcription avoids a hard dependency on an external paid API.
AGPLv3 is a real constraint — any SaaS built on top of this has to open-source its modifications, which rules it out for a lot of commercial use cases. Operationally this is heavy: Postgres, Redis, Celery, Nginx, Gunicorn, FFmpeg all need to run together, and the README's own storage math (3x uploaded video size) means costs scale fast once usage grows. The repo also carries two near-identical 'frontend-tools' subdirectories (chapters-editor, video-editor) with duplicated component/asset trees — looks like scaffolded code bolted on rather than integrated, which is a maintenance smell. It's effectively a single-maintainer project with a consulting business layered on top (the README leads with 'hire us'), so community PR velocity may take a backseat to paid support work.
