A Function as a Service tool makes a function as a container-based service in seconds.
fx is a Go CLI that takes a single handler file in one of about a dozen languages, wraps it in a generated HTTP server and Dockerfile, and runs it on a local Docker daemon, a remote host over SSH, or a Kubernetes cluster. It is for people who want Lambda-style deployment on infrastructure they control and already know Docker or Kubernetes.
Each language has its own directory under bundler/ with a Dockerfile and a small wrapper such as bundler/go/assets/fx.go, so the user writes only the handler and adding a language is a bounded change. The same fx up command targets local Docker, a remote host via --host over SSH, or Kubernetes via FX_KUBECONF, and fx infra create --type k3s bootstraps a k3s cluster over SSH, so the cluster does not have to be built by hand first. The CLI surface is five commands, which keeps it easy to hold in your head.
The last push was 2023-10-24, almost three years ago, so the base images under assets/dockerfiles/base and the runtimes they pin are frozen at whatever was current then, and adopting it means owning that upkeep. The language table mixes maintainer-supported entries with ones credited to outside contributors, and each entry is a separate Dockerfile and wrapper, so the breadth is in templates more than in demonstrated depth; R is still unfinished. The README says nothing about scaling, scale-to-zero, or event triggers, so the 'serverless' topic and the Lambda framing overstate it: it deploys a container that serves one function over plain HTTP on an assigned high port, as the 0.0.0.0:58328 example shows, with no TLS or auth described. EKS is still a TODO, and GKE and AKS need manual kubeconfig steps.
