Database management for VSCode
SQLTools is a VS Code extension for running queries, browsing schemas and managing connections without leaving the editor. The core extension installs alongside a separate driver package for each database, so it suits developers who already live in VS Code and would rather not switch to a standalone client.
The driver split is the right design. The core and each database driver share a base-driver package, so adding a database means adding a package rather than changing the core. Each driver has its own language-server plugin (ls/plugin.ts, ls/driver.ts, a queries file and a keyword list), which is more work than a static word list for autocomplete. Formatting is a standalone package with dialect-specific formatters for Standard SQL, PL/SQL, Db2 and N1QL, each with its own test file. The README lists more than two dozen community drivers, several maintained by the vendors themselves, including Databricks, SAP HANA, Vertica and the Cloud Spanner team.
The README says the project is looking for maintainers for the official drivers, which means the eight official drivers rest on a small group of people. Installing a database is two steps, the core plus a driver, and most community drivers come from third-party publishers with their own release schedules. Those extensions receive database credentials, so users should check who publishes the driver before installing it. The visible test files are mostly connection parsing, schema validation and IAM auth, and the tree shows no test files for the mssql or sqlite drivers. The README's feature list is four bullets and defers detail to an external docs site, and it says nothing about how large result sets or long-running queries are handled.
