nilbuild/driver.js

★ 26,819 · TypeScript · MIT · updated Jul 2026

A lightweight, dependency-free JavaScript library for guiding user focus across the page.

A vanilla TypeScript library for building product tours, spotlights, and focus overlays on a webpage — think 'highlight this button and show a popover explaining it.' Aimed at frontend devs who want onboarding flows without pulling in a framework-specific dependency.

Genuinely zero runtime dependencies and ~5kb gzipped, which matters if you're already fighting bundle size. Test suite is unusually thorough for a UI library — separate files for keyboard nav, positioning, scroll behavior, animation, and backward-compat, not just a handful of smoke tests. The playground (Astro app that imports straight from src/) gives instant hot-reload for contributors instead of the usual build-then-link dance.

README is mostly marketing copy and badges — no actual code sample of driver() usage, you're sent straight to the docs site for anything concrete. Framework-agnostic by design means no first-class React/Vue/Svelte bindings in this repo, so you're writing manual DOM-string popovers if you're in a component framework rather than getting typed props. Single named maintainer/copyright holder is a bus-factor concern for something this widely used (26k+ stars). No mention of SSR/hydration behavior, which trips people up with tour libraries that touch the DOM directly on init.
