Java Microservices: Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, JHipster, Spring Cloud Config, and Spring Cloud Gateway
A grab-bag of five separate example projects tied to a series of Okta developer blog posts, showing Java microservices built with Spring Boot, Spring Cloud (Zuul, Config, Gateway), and JHipster, culminating in a Kubernetes deployment. It's for developers following those specific blog posts to see working code alongside the prose, not really a standalone reference architecture repo.
Covers a genuine progression from blocking (Zuul/Eureka) to reactive (Spring Cloud Gateway/WebFlux) microservices, which is a useful side-by-side if you're deciding which stack to use. The JHipster examples show OAuth2/OIDC wired up end-to-end with real redirect URIs, groups claims, and Spring Cloud Config distributing the settings centrally, which is the fiddly part people usually get wrong. The Kubernetes example walks through JHipster's k8s sub-generator plus Minikube plus Jib image builds, which is a decent amount of glue most tutorials skip.
Last pushed September 2022 and pinned to Java 11 and JHipster 7 — Zuul itself has been in maintenance mode for years, so anyone cloning this today is starting from a dead-end stack. Every example requires creating an Okta developer account and manually wiring client IDs/secrets before anything runs, which means you can't just clone and go; there's no docker-compose-only path that skips the IdP setup. Most of the code isn't hand-written architecture — it's JHipster-generated boilerplate (five separate build files, five separate READMEs), so there's not much here to actually read and learn from beyond configuration snippets. No CI, no tests exercising the microservice interactions, and the five subprojects have drifted independently with no shared versioning, so fixing one doesn't fix the others.
