Open source AI coding agent. Designed for large projects and real world tasks.

Plandex is a Go terminal tool and self-hostable server that plans and applies multi-step coding changes across large projects. It is for developers who have hit the point where a chat assistant loses track of a codebase once it spans dozens of files.

The cumulative diff sandbox is the right design: AI edits accumulate in a versioned plan and only reach the working tree on apply, so you review a whole multi-file change as one unit instead of watching each edit land. Project maps come from tree-sitter, so context selection works from code structure rather than dumping the repo into the prompt, and syntax validation runs after edits. Model roles and packs are defined in versioned JSON schemas, so you can put a stronger model on planning and a cheaper one on building without changing code.

The hosted Plandex Cloud is winding down as of October 2025, and the repo's last push is 2025-10-03, so adopting it now means self-hosting a server with no visible recent maintenance behind it. Local mode needs Docker, Postgres, and your own provider keys, and Windows is supported only through WSL, which is a lot of moving parts for a terminal tool. The 2M and 20M token figures describe capacity, not outcomes, and the README offers no benchmark on real multi-file tasks, so judging quality means trying it on your own code. Costs are also hard to predict from outside, since long plans with repeated context reloads can add up across providers, and the README does not say what a typical feature costs.
