Next-generation ORM for Node.js & TypeScript | PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, SQLite, MongoDB and CockroachDB

Prisma 8 is a ground-up TypeScript rewrite of the popular Node.js ORM, restructured around a minimal core plus a public extension SPI so things like Postgres support, pgvector, and PostGIS are plugins rather than baked into the core. It's aimed at teams already using Prisma or starting a new TypeScript project who want type-safe queries and don't mind adopting a pre-1.0 release.

The extension SPI is a genuine architectural bet, not a marketing bullet point — Postgres support itself is built on the same public interface available to third-party authors, so pgvector, PostGIS, and full-text search ship as separate packages instead of bloating the core. Prisma 7 stays fully supported on its own branch for 18 months after 8.0 ships, so there's an actual migration window instead of a forced cutover. The feature scorecard.md tracks gaps per database openly instead of burying them in release notes. The agent skill files ship inside the installed package itself, so the skill version always matches the ORM version in use, unlike docs sites that drift from the code.

It's a release candidate, not a stable release — the README says 8.0.0 final is 4-8 weeks out, so anything built on it now inherits pre-1.0 breakage risk. SQLite is explicitly called 'a proof of concept today' and MySQL has no support at all yet, so if you're not on Postgres or MongoDB there's nothing usable here right now. It requires Node.js 24+, which rules out a lot of production environments still pinned to LTS 20 or 22. Several of the flagship extensions (PostGIS, ParadeDB, Supabase) are marked experimental, so the 'everything is a plugin' pitch is still thin outside the core Postgres/MongoDB path.
