pydata/pandas-datareader

★ 3,272 · Python · NOASSERTION · updated Jul 2026

Extract data from a wide range of Internet sources into a pandas DataFrame.

A thin, pandas-native wrapper around several macro and financial-data APIs (FRED, Fama/French, World Bank, OECD, Eurostat, Bank of Canada, econdb), returning results as DataFrames instead of raw JSON/XML. It's for economists and quant researchers who want fast access to standard macro series without hand-rolling a request/parse layer for each source.

FRED and Fama/French data in two lines instead of hand-parsing CSV downloads is a real time saver. The new pandas_datareader.macro module unifies OECD/Eurostat SDMX access behind one interface instead of forcing you to learn each agency's quirky schema. It has actual CI, codecov, and readthedocs set up, not just a README promising tests exist.

Yahoo Finance support, historically the reason most people reached for this library, is gone from the documented API; if you came here for stock price data you'll be redirected to yfinance or similar, and the 'stock-data' topic tag is misleading. Each underlying source reader (bankofcanada.py, eurostat.py, oecd.py, fred.py) wraps a different API with its own rate limits and quirks that the abstraction doesn't fully hide, so you'll still end up reading source-specific docs when something breaks. The Python 3.12 distutils/setuptools note in the README is a sign this project reacts to breaking changes rather than staying ahead of them.
