Tiny file search utility (bash)
spot is a single bash script that wraps find + grep + awk into an ack-like search tool. It's for people who want fast, dependency-free file search and are comfortable reading (or editing) 150 lines of shell to get exactly what they want.
The whole thing is one readable bash script, so there's no black box between you and what it's doing. Smart-case and smart-target heuristics (uppercase triggers case-sensitivity, a slash-containing first arg scopes the search) are genuinely convenient defaults. It skips VCS dirs and binaries automatically, and line abbreviation for long/minified lines is a small but real quality-of-life touch.
Last pushed January 2024 and it's a thin wrapper — there's no reason to reach for this over ripgrep or ag, which are faster and handle .gitignore, encoding, and huge files without a bash script gluing find/grep/awk together. No tests, so any shell portability issue (macOS BSD grep vs GNU grep, for instance) is undetected until a user hits it. README leans entirely on screenshots to explain behavior instead of documenting flags in text, which makes it useless to skim or grep for the behavior you want.
