// the take
The original Redux core library for predictable state management in JS apps, now mostly superseded in day-to-day use by Redux Toolkit which wraps it. Relevant for anyone maintaining legacy Redux codebases or who wants to understand the primitives underneath RTK.
Tiny, dependency-light core (2kB) with a well-defined API surface that hasn't needed to change much in years - createStore, combineReducers, applyMiddleware, compose. Extremely mature test suite and TypeScript types that have been battle-tested across the ecosystem. Documentation is genuinely thorough, with both a top-down tutorial and a from-first-principles one, plus FAQ pages addressing real-world gotchas like normalization and middleware authoring.
The README itself tells you not to use this package directly and to reach for Redux Toolkit instead, so the core repo is largely legacy-maintenance mode at this point - new features aren't coming here. Boilerplate-heavy patterns (action types, action creators, reducers, combineReducers) shown in the examples directory are exactly what RTK was built to eliminate, so the examples are more historical than aspirational. No built-in async handling, selectors, or immutability helpers - you're expected to bolt on thunk/saga and Immer yourself if you skip RTK.
