// the take

OSHMI is a SCADA HMI for substations and control centers — screens, alarms, trending, and historian built from SVG/HTML5 graphics plus PHP/Lua on the server side. It's aimed at power utility engineers building ISA101-style operator displays, not general IoT dashboards, though it can stretch to IoT use cases.

Genuinely broad protocol coverage (IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-104, DNP3, Modbus, OPC UA/DA, Siemens S7, ICCP) with dedicated client drivers rather than relying on a third-party gateway for everything. SVG-based screens give lossless vector zoom from phone to video wall, and the Inkscape-based editor is a real workflow for building ISA101 graphics rather than a toy demo. Supports a redundant dual-server/unlimited-client topology, which matters for anything actually running a substation. Has an 230kV-deployment track record, so the control logic and protocol handling have been exercised outside a lab.

The author has already superseded it with JSON-SCADA and says so at the top of the README — this repo is effectively in maintenance mode, not a project you'd want to build new deployments on long-term. The stack is dated: multiple bundled jQuery versions (1.5 through 2.1), PHP, Lua scripting, and SQLite for the historian, with no containerization, CI, or tests visible — upgrading or auditing this codebase will be slow. It's deeply Windows-centric (batch scripts, a custom Windows shell replacement, Windows services for process management), so there's no real path to Linux/cloud-native operation despite the 'cloud-friendly' framing. It explicitly does not function as a protocol gateway by itself, so you still need separate gateway software in the stack, and as ICS/OT software touching live substation equipment, the repo shows no evidence of a security review or hardening process.
